History

Tampa Bay Times Forum History

Ground broke on the Tampa Bay Times Forum in 1995 with the building officially openingin1996. Though the first event at the Tampa Bay Times Forum was the Royal Hanneford Circus, the first Lightning game was played on October 20, 1996, a 5-2 win over the New York Rangers. Since dropping the puck for the first time, the Bolts have gone on to raise multiple banners to the rafters, including the 2004 Stanley Cup Championship, 2004 Eastern Conference Championship, as well as 2002-03 and 2003-04 Southeast Division Championships.

The arena, also home to the Arena Football League’s Tampa Bay Storm, has hosted numerous high-profile events including the 1999 NHL All-Star Game, the 2007 ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament, the 2008 NCAA Women’s Final Four, the 2009 SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament, a rally for then-presidential candidate Barack Obama and more. The Tampa Bay Times Forum is scheduled to host the 2012 Republican National Convention in August, as well as the 2012 NCAA Men’s Hockey Championship, the Frozen Four (April). It is annually named as one of the busiest venues in North America by Pollstar and other leading venue publications. The building serves as the centerpiece of down- town Tampa’s Channel District, which includes numerous hotels, restaurants and nightlife options.

During the summer of 2011, the publicly-owned Tampa Bay Times Forum underwent a $40 million transformation that was privately funded by Tampa Bay Sports and Entertainment owner and chairman, Jeff Vinik. The building boasts 69 executive suites - 20 on the lower level and 49 on the upper level. There is a newly renovated, open-air box office, new seats with cup holders, performance stage with a massive pipe organ, as well as a signature outdoor paradise deck overlooking downtown Tampa. The capacity at the Tampa Bay Times Forum ranges up to 21,000 depending on the event.

Tampa Bay Lightning History

Founded by Hockey Hall-of-Famer Phil Esposito, the Lightning were named after Esposito watched a storm roll in over Tampa Bay. On December 6, 1990, the NHL announced that Esposito’s vision would become reality and that the Lightning would begin play for the 1992-93 season. On October 7, 1992, at the Florida State Fairgrounds Expo Hall, the Lightning dropped the puck on the franchise with a 7-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks that featured four goals by Chris Kontos, a team record that still stands today.

The team moved from Expo Hall to the Thunderdome in downtown St. Petersburg (now Tropicana Field) on July 20, 1993. On October 9, 1993, the Lightning set a NHL single-game attendance record when 27,227 fans attended the first regular season game at the new dome against the Florida Panthers. Tampa Bay made its NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs debut there in 1996, taking on the Philadelphia Flyers in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal. The Lightning eventually lost the hard-fought series in six games. The Bolts moved into the new Tampa Bay Times Forum (then known as the Ice Palace) in downtown Tampa for its next season.

It would take a few years for Tampa Bay to again get a taste of the post- season, but in 2002-03 the Lightning captured their first Southeast Division title. That year the Lightning went on to defeat the Washington Capitals in six games in the Conference Quarterfinal for what was the franchise’s first series win. Despite a loss to the eventual Stanley Cup Champion New Jersey Devils in the second round, the seeds were sewn for future success. The next season Tampa Bay had the best campaign in team history, posting a 46-22-8-6 record, with 106 points and a second consecutive division championship. But it was what happened in the postseason that became the franchise’s crowning achievement. Following a 23-game gauntlet against some of the NHL’s best teams, the Lightning captured the organization’s first Stanley Cup Championship on June 7, 2004, on home ice with a 2-1 win in Game 7 against the Calgary Flames.

Complete with a new owner and a new vision, a transformed Lightning team played to within one game of the Stanley Cup Final in 2011, Jeff Vinik’s first full season as owner and chairman. That team tied the franchise record for wins in a season with 46, and was second for points with 103. The Lightning now look toward the future with a rejuvenated fan base and heightened expectations.

“Lightning Strikes”

2011-12 marks the first season of the “Lightning Strikes.” Installed in the Northwest and Southeast endzones, two identical 25’ tall Tesla coils now loom over the Bolts Nation and are ready to bring our Lightning out to the ice and celebrate goals with authentic, indoor lightning. Each coil will throw lightning 25’ in two directions – a total of 100’ of high voltage fun. It’s estimated be the largest amount of indoor lightning throw...in the world!

Lightning Vision

Lightning Vision is a phrase with two meanings. First, Lightning Vision is the high-resolution, center-hung video board measuring 27-feet high and 15-feet wide. Included under the Lightning Vision banner is the system of 360-LED digital displays, and nine new-for-2011 LED fascia displays in the four quadrants of the main concourse.

Secondly, Lightning Vision comprises the crew of producers, editors, videographers, graphic designers, performers and production crew who both create, and technically support, the presentation of the vast variety of game presentation elements such as: video features, highlights, replays, prompts, pre-game intros, live performances and more at our Bolts home games and a number of Tampa Bay Times Forum events.

Lightning Vision Cast

The Lightning’s game-night presentation engages our fans through a collection of talented individuals. Here is our cast:

  • Bolt Brigade: The Bolt Brigade is the Lightning’s in-game interactive team. They help with on-ice contests and in-stand promotions, all- important t-shirt launches, pre-game staging and skating, and can be seen engaging with fans on the Plaza and selecting contest participants. The Bolt Brigade can also be found in the community at Lightning watch parties, parades, and many other events where a touch of energy is the call. To bring the Bolt Brigade to an event, please email gameentertainment@tampabaytimesforum.com.
  • Brittany Zion: Brittany returns for her 3rd season as the in-game host for the Lightning. In addition to hosting a variety of promotions and presentations on the ice, in the stands and pre-game on the Plaza, Brittany can also be seen emceeing watch parties and a handful of Lightning community events. Additionally, Brittany hosts a number of web video features at TampaBayLightning.com.
  • Lightning Girls: The Lightning Girls serve as the team’s ambassadors, creating enthusiasm and support for the home team at a number of Lightning events and community events throughout the Bay Area all year long. On game nights, you can spot the Girls greeting fans at our main entrance pre-game, signing autographs and taking pictures with fans, and of course, cheering along with our fans in the stands during the hockey contest. To bring the Lightning Girls to an event, please log on to TampaBayLightning.com, and find the Lightning Girl appearance request under “Fan Zone.”
  • The "Music Man": Sean Bolvelsky returns for his 15th consecutive season as the Lightning’s “music man” behind the scenes, collecting and playing all the pre-recorded music you’ll hear during a Bolts game. Sean is also the in-bowl music director for the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers and has performed at the 2010 Winter Olympics.
  • Paul Porter: Paul Porter returns for his 18th season as the PA announcer for the Tampa Bay Lightning. A long-time radio presence in Tampa Bay, he is currently the morning update sports anchor for Talkradio 860 WGUL in Tampa and hosts a weekly radio program on Saturday mornings. Area sports fans can also find Paul serving as the in-arena voice of the AFL’s Tampa Bay Storm and the NBA’s Orlando Magic.
  • Ray Horsley: Ray begins the 2011-12 season as the Lightning’s first- ever performer at the controls of the new terrace level Walker Custom Theatre Organ. An accomplished musician, Ray brings to the Lightning game-night over thirty-five years of organ performance experience, and thirty years experience entertaining audiences of all kinds from piano bars to casinos to concert halls. He also may be the nicest guy you’ll ever meet. Welcome “Lightning Ray!”
  • ThunderBug, presented by Florida Central Credit Union: Lightning’s official mascot since 1992, ThunderBug can always be spotted having fun with our fans at Bolts’ home games. When he’s not meeting and greeting fans on the Plaza and roaming the stands and lead- ing the crowd in cheers at hockey games, “Bug” can always be found representing the Lightning and bringing smiles to over 200 Bay Area community events annually – from charity events to school appearances, corporate shindigs to private parties, and everything in-between. If you’d like ThunderBug to strike at your next big event, please log on to TampaBayLightning.com, and find the Thunderbug appearance request under “Fan Zone.”
