History
Ground broke on the Tampa Bay Times Forum (originally called the Ice Palace) in 1995, creating a 670,000 square-foot entertainment destination in the heart of downtown Tampa. The venue's first event, the Royal Hanneford Circus, was held in 1996. It was followed by the Tampa Bay Lightning's first game in the venue on October 20, 1996 against the New York Rangers. The Times Forum has been home to the Bolts for more than 15 years, with the team raising multiple championship banners to the rafters, including the 2002-03 and 2003-04 Southeast Division Championships, the 2004 Eastern Conference Championship and the 2004 Stanley Cup Championship.
The arena, also home to the Arena Football League’s Tampa Bay Storm, has hosted numerous high-profile events including the 1999 NHL All-Star Game, the 2007 ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament, the 2008 NCAA Women’s Final Four, the 2009 SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament, 2012 NCAA Men’s Hockey Championships (the Frozen Four) and 2012 Republican National Convention. On average, the venue hosts around 150 events per year. As a result, the Times Forum is consistently recognized as one of the world’s top arenas. In July of 2012, the venue was ranked #2 in the U.S. and #15 in the world for overall tickets sold by Pollstar Magazine.
During the summer of 2011, the publicly-owned Tampa Bay Times Forum underwent a $42 million transformation that was privately-funded by Tampa Bay Sports and Entertainment owner and chairman, Jeff Vinik. Some of the highlights to the arena’s renovation include a newly-renovated, open-air ticket office, new seats with cup holders, the complete renovation to the venue's 69 executive suites, a performance stage with a grand digital pipe organ and a signature outdoor party deck boasting views of downtown Tampa. In addition, during the summer of 2012, the Times Forum installed the largest high-definition center-hung scoreboard in the United States or Canada.
Founded by Hockey Hall-of-Famer Phil Esposito, the Lightning was named after Esposito watched a storm roll in over Tampa Bay. On December 6, 1990, the NHL announced that Esposito’s vision would become reality and the Lightning would begin play for the 1992-93 season. On October 7, 1992, at the Florida State Fairgrounds’ Expo Hall, the Lightning dropped the puck on the franchise with a 7-3 win against the Chicago Blackhawks that featured four goals by Chris Kontos, a team record that still stands today.
The team then moved from Expo Hall to the Thunderdome in downtown St. Petersburg (now Tropicana Field) on July 20, 1993. On October 9, 1993 the Lightning set a NHL single-game attendance record when 27,227 fans attended the first regular season game at the new dome against the Florida Panthers. Tampa Bay made its NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs debut there in 1996, taking on the Philadelphia Flyers in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal. The Lightning eventually lost the hard-fought series in six games. The Bolts moved into the new Tampa Bay Times Forum (then known as the Ice Palace) in downtown Tampa for its next season.
It would take a few years for Tampa Bay to again get a taste of the postseason, but in 2002-03 the Lightning captured their first Southeast Division title. That year the Lightning went on to defeat the Washington Capitals in six games in the Conference Quarterfinal for what was the franchise’s first series win. Despite a loss to the eventual Stanley Cup Champion New Jersey Devils in the second round, the seeds were sewn for future success. The next season Tampa Bay had the best campaign in team history, posting a 46-22-8-6 record with 106 points and a second consecutive division championship. But it was what happened in the postseason that became the franchise’s crowning achievement. Following a 23-game gauntlet against some of the NHL’s best teams, the Lightning captured the organization’s first Stanley Cup Championship on June 7, 2004 in front of their home fans with a 2-1 win in Game 7 against the Calgary Flames.
Complete with a new owner and vision, the transformed franchise played to within one game of the Stanley Cup Final in 2011, Jeff Vinik’s first full season as owner and chairman. In 2012-13, a re-loaded Bolts squad will celebrate its 20th NHL season. A busy offseason, filled with key player acquisitions, has turned to optimism as an energized fan base hopes to make the anniversary season one to remember.

Lightning Foundation
The Lightning Foundation is dedicated to investing its resources and leadership for the enrichment of the people of Tampa Bay, focusing on meeting basic human needs and enhancing lives. The foundation organizes and executes a number of fundraisers throughout the year, as well as aiding in the efforts of charitable organizations throughout the state of Florida. For information on the Lightning Foundation please click here.
Glitz & Sticks, a Celebrity Casino Evening, has had a tremendous decade of serving as the Lightning Foundation’s annual hallmark event, with proceeds benefitting the Tampa General Hospital Foundation and the Lightning Foundation. Glitz & Sticks guests have enjoyed dancing, entertainment, distinct live and silent auctions and gourmet delicacies, all while the Lightning players deal to guests and fans in a variety of casino-style games.
The Lightning Foundation conducts a live, in-game auction at section 120 every game night. These one-of-a-kind silent auctions will feature dynamic sports memorabilia from not only your favorite members of the Tampa Bay Lightning, but other stars in the sports world, past and present. All proceeds will benefit the Lightning Foundation and its initiative of giving back in the community.
Lightning owner Jeff Vinik, along with his wife, Penny, launched the Community Heroes initiative at the beginning of the 2011-2012 season to distribute $10 million dollars to deserving grass roots community heroes throughout the Tampa Bay community over the next five years. Last season, the Lightning honored a Community Hero at each of the Lightning’s 41 regular season games, and awarded a $50,000 check to a non-profit charity of his or her choice. Over the course of the 2011-2012 season, a total of $2,050,000 was distributed to worthy community causes. We are looking forward to celebrating Community Heroes at each of our 41 home games this 2012-2013 season and to awarding each Hero with $50,000 to designate to worthy causes yet again, with the goal of distributing $2,050,000 throughout the community over the course of the season.
Fans are encouraged to log on to http://tampabaylightning.com/heroes to receive additional details about the program, as well as to nominate deserving individuals who are making the Tampa Bay area a better place to live, work and play.
Your license to promote youth and sports in Florida is as near as your local motor vehicle tag agency office. The Florida Sports Foundation and the Tampa Bay Lightning encourage you to purchase the specialty tag of the Bolts. Proceeds from the additional $25 tag fee directly support the Lightning Foundation and the development of major and regional sports events throughout Florida. “Lightning Strikes”
2012-13 marks the 2nd consecutive season of the “Lightning Strikes.” Installed in the northwest and southeast end zones, two identical 25’ tall Tesla coils loom over the Bolts Nation…ready to bring our Lightning out to the ice and celebrate goals with authentic, indoor lightning. Each coil throws lightning 25’ in two directions – a total of 100’ of high voltage fun. It’s estimated be the largest amount of indoor lightning thrown…in the world!
Lightning Vision Scoreboard
We are continuing our transformation of the Tampa Bay Times Forum with an exciting new addition to your fan experience. Enjoy a brand new Lightning Vision scoreboard for the 2012-13 season and don’t miss a minute of the high-definition action straight from your seat! Manufactured by Daktronics, the new Lightning Vision scoreboard is one of the largest indoor scoreboards in the NHL and NBA. The high definition 6mm board has the highest level of clarity of a video board approximately 30 feet tall and 50 feet wide. To support content for the new display, major components of the Lightning Vision control room and production facilities were also upgraded to high definition. Additionally, new speakers under the display will better cover the ice/arena floor with sound.
